Joanna Lumley’s race to finish travel show

VacationHunter – Joanna Lumley was in a race to finish filming ‘Home Sweet Home – Travels In My Own Land’ before COVID-19 hit the UK. The 74-year-old TV veteran was able to wrap up production on her upcoming travel show “in the nick of time” before the coronavirus pandemic swept the nation in early 2020, and government restrictions were put in place to stop unnecessary travel.

She told the Daily Star newspaper’s Hot TV column: “We were being chased, it was like surfing in the front of a wave because COVID was coming behind us all the time. “We were so careful – we were tested, tested, tested and everywhere we went we followed all the regulations. But we were just in the nick of time – you couldn’t do it now.”

The ITV travel series sees Joanna travel across the UK to visit the Outer Hebrides in Scotland and meet up with ‘Derry Girls’ star Saoirsemonica Jackson in Derry.

It comes after her plans to film in Eygpt and Sri Lanka were cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic, and she instead decided to explore what the UK has to offer.

In Scotland, she looks around the Harris tweed industry, drives a herd of Highland cattle, and takes in the sights at Eilean Donan Castle before moving to Northern Ireland, where she takes a tour of Ulster takes in the famous Dark Hedges, and a visit to Londonderry to meet Children in Crossfire founder, Richard Moore.

She said: “In Derry we wanted to film the historic murals, The Derry Girls and my friend Richard Moore, the ‘Derry Lama’, as the Dalai Lama calls him. It suddenly seemed that we could link these three stories together by art: the ravishing mural Saoirse-Monica showed me of the Derry Girls led us easily to Karl, whose team is creating such important new art work in this fabulous city.”
